Docudays UA

The International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival Docudays UA is the largest human rights documentary film festival in Eastern Europe. The festival is a vibrant cultural event that takes place in Kyiv annualy.

Mission of the Festival

We create opportunities for every person in Ukraine to watch talented and relevant human rights documentary films from all over the world. We promote an active civic position and respect for human dignity. We support the development of the Ukrainian film industry.

The festival called Docuday UA on Human Rights was held for the first time in 2003. Most of them were Ukrainian premieres. From the beginning, the organizers wanted the selected films to be screened not only in Kyiv, but across all of Ukraine.

The second festival was held in 2005 and had the subtitle "Ukrainian Context". This time the program consisted mainly of non-fiction films, all of which were screened at Cinema House in Kyiv. Shortly after, the festival went on tour around Ukraine. As a result the Docudays on Human Rights Traveling Festival was born.

After the end of the Festival in Kyiv, the organisers carry out the Travelling Docudays UA Human Rights Documentary Film Festival in the regions of Ukraine. The screenings are held in October–November in cinemas, houses of culture, universities, schools, youth clubs, book stores, libraries, as well as in prisons and jails and in educational facilities for future penitentiary system workers, etc. The screenings of festival films in the regions are reinforced by discussions on human rights with involvement of experts.

DOCUDAYS UA IS CURRENTLY A GROUP OF PROJECTS UNITED BY AN UMBRELLA BRAND, HAVING A COMMON MISSION AND GOAL

DOCUDAYS UA INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS DOCUMENTARY FILM FESTIVAL → – a competitive international event taking place during the last week of March in Kyiv. Due to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia, the traditional dates of the festival have been temporarily changed. The festival is non-political and non-commercial.

TRAVELLING DOCUDAYS UA HUMAN RIGHTS DOCUMENTARY FILM FESTIVAL → – takes place annually from October to the end of December in 23 regions of Ukraine – in cinemas, cultural centers, higher education institutions, schools, youth clubs, bookstores, libraries, prisons, and educational institutions for future employees of the penitentiary system. The organizing partners are regional representatives of the festival, which form the Docudays UA Regional Partners Network, which includes more than 50 NGOs in 23 regions of Ukraine and abroad.

The DOCU/CLUB → – Network aimed at raising awareness of human rights and providing Ukrainians with free access to the best documentary films from all over the world. Using films and discussions, we spread knowledge about human rights and methods of their protection, form an understanding of human dignity as the highest value of Ukrainian society, develop civic activism, and create an engaged civil society. The Network currently includes more than 600 clubs that operate as independent initiative groups at civic, state, and municipal institutions throughout Ukraine. The DOCU/CLUB Network includes more than 130 films from the media library of the Docudays UA International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival, including the winners of the Sundance Film Festival, Sheffield Doc/Fest, Watch Docs, and other major festivals. The films are translated and dubbed into Ukrainian. Each film is accompanied by a discussion script developed by human rights experts, as well as interactive exercises and other methodological materials.

DOCUSPACE → – is an online cinema where you can watch creative documentaries from Ukraine and the world, carefully selected by the Docudays UA team. Every year during the Docudays UA International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival, the online cinema becomes the festival platform. The festival films and events are streamed here. The website has a special mode for users with visual impairments. You can switch to this mode by clicking the relevant icon in the upper left corner of the website. In addition, most films have adapted subtitles which allow people with hearing impairments to follow the plot and become better immersed in the film's atmosphere.

International Documentary Film Workshop

International Documentary Film Workshop (IDW) is a consulting and training initiative offered by The Centre for Modern Information Techniques and Visual Arts, NGO for filmmakers, new media professionals and NGO representatives who want to develop projects about particular social themes and find strategies and possibilities, partners, investors for financing, production and distribution.

Over 270 documentary film projects (directors and producers) received development training and consultations.

Catalogue of the Ukrainian Documentary

Since 2016, every year, the Docudays UA team compiles a CATALOG OF THE UKRAINIAN DOCUMENTARY. The English version is distributed at specialized international film markets. The catalog contains information about finished films and projects in progress, as well as contacts of Ukrainian independent producers, film and TV studios, festivals, distributors.

Promotion of Ukrainian Documentary

For the first time a presentation took place at the Sheffield Doc Fest International Documentary Film Festival in Sheffield (Great Britain) in 2014. Presentations took place at the Jihlava International Film Festival (Czech Republic), Dok Leipzig (Germany), Vision du Reel (Switzerland).

Посібник, адресований студентам вищих навчальних закладів кінематографічного спрямування та факультетів тележурналістики, репортажу тощо. У десятьох розділах книги автор оповідає про різні періоди роботи над документальнимі фільмами, на підставі власних стрічок аналізує роботу режисера на знімальному майданчику та ділиться досвідом співпраці режисера з героями документальних фільмів. Книгу можна використовувати як підручник, а також вона буде корисною для всіх, хто цікавиться документальним кіно.

UKRAINIAN DOCUMENTARY FILMS 2016-2018 — Каталог української документалістики (англійською мовою)

До Третього видання каталогу увійшли фільми та кінопроекти 2016 – 2018 років випуску, а також роботи, що перебувають зараз на етапі розробки й виробництва. Окрім того, у каталозі опубліковано інформацію про незалежних продюсерів, продакшн-компанії, кіно- та телестудії, які займаються виробництвом документального кіно, кінофестивалі, що працюють із документальними фільмами, і про дистриб'юторів неігрового кіно в Україні. Видання здійснено за фінансової підтримки Державного агентства України з питань кіно.

«Жива ватра» — DVD видання для некомерційного використання

Чотирьохрічне кіноспостереження за життям вівчарів трьох поколінь в українських Карпатах на фоні сучасних змін. Автор сценарію і режисер Остап Костюк. Національна кінематека України за фінансової підтримки Держкіно України, 77 хв., 2014 рік.

Україна, одна з небагатьох країн світу, де проблему йодної недостатності у населення все ще не можуть вирішити. А все тому, що для вирішення цієї проблеми немає необхідності у великих фінансах. Байдужість влади до цієї проблеми свідчить, що пріоритетами державних діячів залишаються питання, які можуть принести особисту фінансову вигоду.

«Чорнобиль. Зона безглуздя» — Документальний фільм, 17 хв., 2006 р.

Автор сценарію і режисер Геннадій Кофман, оператори І. Гречко, М. Беценко, Музика Олександр Ковалевський. За фінансової підтримки Дитячого Фонду ООН (ЮНІСЕФ). Фільм присвячено медичним наслідкам Чорнобильської катастрофи для населення та, насамперед, про відсутність попередження йодної недостатності у дітей та молоді. Національна прем'єра фільму та обговорення із експертами відбулися на 5-му каналі телебачення 27 квітня 2006 року з нагоди 20-ї річниці аварії на ЧАЕС.

„Літопис майбутнього. Спроби корекції долі"

Документальний серіал про найгірші форми дитячої праці в Україні, 2003-2004. Створено за фінансової підтримки Програми ІПЕК Міжнародної організації праці.

„Загадки інтелекту, який зникає" — науково-популярний фільм, 17 хв., 2003 р.

Автор сценарію і режисер Геннадій Кофман, Оператори І. Гречко, М. Беценко. Цікаво і доступно про вплив йоду на організм людини, його фізичний та інтелектуальний розвиток. За фінансової підтримки Дитячого Фонду ООН (ЮНІСЕФ). Фільм демонструвався більш ніж на 50 телевізійних каналах, безкоштовно розповсюджуються за запитом навчальних закладів та громадських організацій.

„Аліна" — документальний фільм, 15 хв., 2001 р.

Автор сценарію і режисер Геннадій Кофман, Оператори І. Гречко, М. Беценко. Її життя кожен день залежить від штучних гормонів. Причиною цього став брак йоду в організмі. До двох років Аліна не вміла ні ходити, ні говорити. У перший клас дівчинка пішла у вісім років, коли її розвиток досяг рівня 5-ти річної дитини. Фільм створено за підтримки Дитячого Фонду ООН (ЮНІСЕФ), та фінансової підтримки "KIWANIS Int." Фильм транслювався на 76 телеканалах України.
